In honor of National Women’s Day, CA Mining is excited to shine a spotlight on one of our exceptional team members, Siobhan Wissing, a data analyst whose work is not only pivotal to our success but also inspiring to many. Siobhan’s journey into the world of data analytics is one marked by curiosity, a knack for research, and a passion for making a difference. Her story is one that resonates with many women navigating careers in male-dominated industries like mining, data analytics and recruitment.
Journey into Data Analytics
Siobhan’s path to becoming a data analyst wasn’t one she initially envisioned. Reflecting on her journey, she shares, “I was always told throughout my life that I had a natural ability to understand computers and grasp new things when it came to learning about systems.” This natural aptitude, combined with a relentless curiosity, led her to explore various topics deeply.
Her love for research and statistics became evident during a job interview about five years ago. Siobhan recalls, “I had no idea what position I was interviewing for, and the people interviewing me were trying to find a spot to place me in the company because they needed people. Once hearing about my interests, they decided to push me in the direction of data analysis and research.” This serendipitous turn of events was the beginning of her journey into the field, where she quickly found herself immersed in the world of data, solving problems, and uncovering insights.
A Passion for the Mining Industry
While Siobhan’s entry into data analytics might have been unexpected, her passion for the mining industry was ignited by the people she met along the way. “When I started meeting and speaking to the people that work in the industry and hearing what they go through and how passionate they are about their jobs, I wanted to know everything!” she explains. This passion wasn’t just about the numbers or the technical details; it was about the people behind the data.
Siobhan saw an industry that was underrepresented and wanted to make an impact by providing accurate, data-driven insights to help others understand what working in mining entails. Through her work on Project TELL and Insights reports, she’s been able to represent the voices of those in the industry, ensuring that both current and prospective workers have the information they need.
The Role of Data Analysis in Mining Recruitment
In a sector as dynamic and complex as mining, data plays a crucial role in recruitment. Siobhan’s work as a data analyst at CA Mining involves thorough research and statistical analysis, which helps consultants guide candidates through the recruitment process with confidence. “By doing thorough research and gaining statistical information from our candidates and looking at trends we see in the mining sector, we can provide our consultants with relevant information regarding salary, commodities, what’s happening in certain companies, etc.,” she says.
This information is invaluable to consultants as they help candidates navigate the recruitment process, addressing any questions or concerns with up-to-date, accurate knowledge. Siobhan’s ability to distill complex data into actionable insights has made her an essential part of the CA Mining team, ensuring that candidates are well-prepared and informed.
Advice for Aspiring Women in Data Analytics
For young women aspiring to enter the field of data analytics, Siobhan has some sage advice: “Don’t try and do everything at once! Break down learning data analysis into steps and figure out what software you feel would be most beneficial to master first.” She emphasizes the importance of starting with Excel, which she considers the backbone of most data analysis tools. Mastering Excel provides a strong foundation for understanding other software and even introduces some basic coding concepts through Macros.
Siobhan also encourages women to be patient with themselves as they navigate the learning curve. Data analytics can be challenging, but by taking it step by step and focusing on one area at a time, aspiring analysts can build their skills and confidence over time.
Looking Ahead: Future Goals
When asked about her career goals for the next 5-10 years, Siobhan’s enthusiasm for growth is palpable. “I would like to become fully Microsoft certified and hopefully have the opportunity to teach or guide other women in the field of data analytics,” she shares. She’s also considering expanding her skill set to include programming, software development, and learning more about AI, recognizing the potential these areas have in enhancing the world of data analytics.
Siobhan’s commitment to continuous learning and her desire to mentor others in the field highlight her passion for both personal and professional development. Her goals reflect a forward-thinking mindset that’s essential in the ever-evolving field of data analytics.
Women in Tech: Representation and Challenges
Siobhan is optimistic about the progress women have made in tech, particularly in data analytics. “I feel that we could always be represented more, but there has been phenomenal progress made in the past few years,” she notes. Despite this progress, she acknowledges that gender-specific challenges still exist, such as the assumption that she might be in a more traditional administrative role rather than a technical one.
However, Siobhan is quick to point out that these challenges haven’t deterred her. Instead, they’ve fueled her drive to excel and to support other women in tech. “I think us ladies are pretty tech-savvy, and once we figure out what we can do tech-wise, we can be pretty unstoppable powerhouses,” she asserts.
The Importance of Diversity and
Inclusion
Diversity and inclusion are topics that Siobhan feels strongly about, particularly in recruitment. “We are in a changing world, and the workforce looks a lot different in today’s society compared to the past,” she observes. For Siobhan, diversity and inclusion aren’t just about checking boxes; they’re about creating an environment where everyone feels valued and understood.
She believes that when a team is aware of and celebrates its differences, it can better support candidates, ensuring they feel comfortable, confident, and seen throughout the recruitment process. Siobhan’s dedication to fostering an inclusive environment at CA Mining is just one of the many ways she contributes to the company’s success.
Motivation and Work-Life Balance
In a demanding industry like mining recruitment, maintaining a work-life balance is crucial. For Siobhan, gratitude is key. “I always make sure to start and end my day by listing all the things I am grateful for and that are positive in my life before thinking of anything else,” she says. Outside of work, she stays active, spends time with loved ones, and has learned the importance of saying no when her plate is full.
This balance not only keeps her grounded but also ensures that she can bring her best self to her work each day, contributing to the team’s success and supporting her colleagues.
Celebrating Women in the Workplace
As we celebrate National Women’s Month, Siobhan’s experiences remind us of the incredible impact women have in the workplace. “The sisterhood, support, understanding, guidance, and discipline I have learned from the women I have had the pleasure to work with have been unforgettable,” she reflects. She hopes that other women recognize the difference they’re making, even if they aren’t aware of it.
Siobhan’s journey, her dedication to her craft, and her passion for making a difference in the mining industry serve as an inspiration to us all. This National Women’s Month, we celebrate Siobhan and all the women at CA Mining who bring their unique talents, perspectives, and passion to the workplace.
