Lessons from China: A Case of Early Adoption, Not Mismanagement
China has long been a trailblazer in renewable energy adoption, particularly in the solar sector. As one of the first nations to implement large-scale solar infrastructure, its solar panels are naturally reaching the end of their 20–30-year lifespans sooner than most.
This isn’t a case of mismanagement or negligence. Rather, it’s a byproduct of pioneering progress. When solar panels reach end-of-life, they must be disposed of or, ideally, recycled. But without robust recycling systems in place, panels pile up. Thus, the so-called “graveyards” in China are cautionary tales for the rest of the world; a glimpse into what might happen elsewhere if the circular economy isn’t taken seriously.
Africa’s Renewable Energy Landscape
Africa is on the cusp of a renewable energy transformation. With vast solar potential and a growing market for electric vehicles (EVs), the continent is ripe for sustainable development. Projections suggest that by 2030, Africa will host around 10 million electric vehicles. While this figure pales in comparison to more developed markets, it represents a significant step forward in green mobility on the continent.
However, Africa currently finds itself at a disadvantage. An estimated 95% of the global battery value chain lies outside of the continent, leaving African nations dependent on imported technologies. This reliance drives up costs and makes it harder for African businesses and consumers to access clean energy affordably.
Add to this the fact that globally, only 5% of lithium batteries are recycled despite the fact that as much as 95% of their material value can be recovered. Herein lies the opportunity. Africa can sidestep the mistakes made by early adopters by embedding circular economy principles into its renewable infrastructure from the outset.
What It Means for Renewable Energy
At its core, a circular economy in renewable energy involves rethinking how materials are sourced, used, and disposed of. For solar panels, this could mean recovering valuable minerals like silicon, silver, and aluminum for reuse. For lithium-ion batteries, it involves reclaiming cobalt, nickel, and lithium.
When properly managed, this approach reduces environmental harm, eases the pressure on raw material extraction, and creates new economic opportunities; particularly in job creation and technological innovation.
The Current Reality of Gaps in Recycling and Gaps in Policy
Despite the potential, implementation remains a challenge. Globally, most solar panels and lithium batteries are either landfilled or incinerated. This is due in part to the complexity of recycling technologies, limited infrastructure, and the absence of comprehensive policies.
In Africa, the challenge is compounded by limited funding, inconsistent regulatory frameworks, and the need for broader industrial capacity. However, the tide is beginning to turn.
African Innovation: Leading with Policy and Pilot Projects
Several African nations are proactively stepping into the circular economy space, proving that leadership doesn’t always require vast resources; it can come from vision, policy, and partnerships.
Rwanda has made strides with its e-waste recycling plant and policies encouraging responsible consumption. South Africa has launched solar panel recycling initiatives and is increasingly focused on local beneficiation. Nigeria is exploring battery recycling opportunities alongside broader waste management reforms. Kenya is experimenting with innovative reuse models, such as second-life battery storage for off-grid communities.
These pilot projects and policy efforts serve as blueprints for what a scalable, continent-wide strategy might look like.
Technology: Both a Challenge and a Catalyst
The pace of innovation in renewable energy technology is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it creates new materials, formats, and functionalities that can complicate recycling processes. On the other, it also presents opportunities for smarter, more efficient recycling methods and modular designs.
As battery chemistries evolve and solar panels become more advanced, recycling methods must also adapt. This creates fertile ground for African innovation; developing technologies that are built with recycling in mind from day one.

Africa’s unique position rich in natural resources and increasingly focused on renewable adoption could allow it to become a global leader in sustainable energy lifecycle management.
