2Tantalum is only found in a few countries around the globe. Africa is rich in tantalum and a large portion of the world’s tantalum is found and mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rwanda also holds tantalum deposits which it mines, however it also imports tantalum from the DRC. It is the world’s largest tantalum producer, followed by the DRC. Other producers of tantalum in Africa are Nigeria and, less significantly, Ethiopia.

Tantalum is a rare, blue-grey, lustrous metal. It is hard and highly corrosion-resistant, existing naturally in the mineral tantalite, and always occurring together with the chemically similar niobium. Tantalum is part of the refractory metals group, which are commonly used as minor components in alloys. The chemical inertness of tantalum makes it a valuable substance for laboratory equipment and a substitute for platinum.
