Safety Officer -Khatu

What industry do you work in and what exactly are your skills?

I work within the mining and construction industry and currently work as a Safety Officer. My job functions is to manage health and safety issues and advise management of any risks.

What inspired you to get into this sort of industry?

My manager inspired me a lot to get into this line of work – he believed so much in me 100% enhanced my people skills.

What qualifications and experience did you have to gain In order to establish yourself and therefore become  a professional  within your industry?

I had to attend safety management courses and gain experience in the field.

What is the most challenging aspect within your field of work?

Surprising incidents and dangerous accidents are by far the most challenging aspects within my industry.

How do you manage and overcome these challenges?

By being pro active at all times. It is so vital to be updated with knowledge concerning safety management approaches, tools and rules.  

What has been the highlight of your career?

When I was given a project to manage and I finished that project without any accidents.

If somebody starts as a trainee / beginner within your line of work, what could they earn in salary?

Roughly R12 000

What can this person expect to earn after 10 years of experience?

Roughly R80 000

Who is your role model and why?

Nelson Mandela- He contributed a lot in this world and he accomplished so much for humanity.

What motivates you to work this hard?

The lives of people are under threat when working in this field. I would like to see a zero percent injury rate in the near future in all industries and especially this one.

What is your outlook within your industry over the next 5 years?

Overall growth in this industry to minimise unemployment across the continent. Adding to this, I am determined to build the best career for myself, comprising of valuable skills.

As you know, numerous African countries are being invested in due to their rich minerals. Which country within Africa do you think will be the next hot spot and why?

Ghana- there is a lot of upcoming mining in that country and this will create more job opportunities for people and therefore minimise poverty.
