Job Description:
The successful incumbent must provide safe, efficient and cost-effective operational control and leadership of the Supply & Contract Department aligned to the business strategy and goals. They will provide leadership, set and drive the Departmental strategy to align with the business needs as per the three-year budget and life of mine plan. This will facilitate cross departmental co-operation and collaboration to maximise business value. This role reports directly in to the General Manager.

  • Accountability for performance of the Supply and Contracts team and ensure overall quality execution of tasks/services
  • Lead, coach, mentor and support employees and direct reports to understand and deliver on the plan
  • Social licence to operate: Respecting local communities, their cultures, traditions and leaders
  • Ensuring that any work that may impact local communities only proceeds following appropriate engagement and consultation
  • Actively supporting the company Community Development initiatives
  • Ensuring compliance to all relevant national regulations and laws
  • Ensures that business partners abide by the company community and environment policies and do not bring the company into dispute with communities, local and national authorities
  • Budgets, Cost & Governance: Establish effective budgeting, forecasting, cost management and analysis processes ensuring compliance with company financial and governance policies, procedures and reporting standards
  • Defining high quality budgets and forecasts that align to the business tactical and strategic objectives
  • Identifying and quantifying the risks inherent in the budget and departmental operations define and mandate appropriate mitigation strategies 
  • Delivering budgets and forecasts as per the business planning cycle
  • Managing business to the budget and forecast commitments
  • Maximising cash delivery and value add to the business
  • Undertaking all business in adherence to the company Code of Conduct, Anti-Bribery and Corruption and Fraud prevention policies, procedures and strategies
  • Leadership, People & Development: Openly support Company policy regardless of personal views

  • Technical: Championing, communicating and embedding the adoption of business improvement culture across site within disciplines and with business partners
  • Challenging and supporting all parts of the business to deliver sustained improved performance through performance analysis, business improvement project implementation, and personal influence, driving continuous improvement through technical excellence and direction, focusing on value generation through margin improvement
  • Managing change and risk through the application of appropriate assessment and quantification process to ensure that the business is not deliberately or inadvertently subjected to unnecessary operational, commercial or legal risks
  • Business Systems & Practices: Ensuring that all practices including but not limited to procurement, commercial transactions tenders, contractor management and engagement are documented, auditable and transparent
  • Ensuring commercial processes are compliant with Company procedures and requirements; that high standards of ethical business conduct are practised and enforced in compliance with the Company Code of Conduct and Fraud, Anti Bribery and Corruption policies, Country and applicable international
  • Actively manage spend ensuring over 80% of spend is reviewed with spend on competitive, current and negotiated terms 
  • Contracts: Ensuring appropriate application of and compliance with OHADA rules for contracts and the carriage of goods
  • Ensuring that all procurement of goods and services deliver market competitive outcomes and sole sourcing is minimised other than where required to support this objective
  • Defining, implementing and monitoring a tender review process to ensure effective commercial outcomes with high standards of ethical conduct and probity
  • Procurement & Strategic Sourcing: Develop a strategic sourcing framework, consistent with Company standards, that is actively applied to all strategic sourcing opportunities
  • Customer focused procurement to deliver the right items to the right place at the right time.
  • Maximisation of on contract spend
  • Integrate the Procurement function with Contracts and Strategic Sourcing to deliver optimal commercial outcomes. Ensuring that regional supply markets are well understood including supplier competitiveness and capability.
  • Apply high levels of commercial acumen to ensure sourcing delivers highest value outcomes; ensure current awareness of key markets and suppliers to maximise market intelligence and awareness of alternatives and market development
  • Defining and implementing strategic procurement activities across multiple categories of spend focusing on minimising cost, lead-time and logistics routes
  • Warehouse & Inventory: Lead development of strategies for cataloguing, managing inventoried materials, warehouse operations and internal deliveries to end users
  • Develop Inventory Management and Reduction strategies to support optimization of critical stock and spares holdings ensuring plant reliability
  • Optimisation of working capital
  • Implement effective contamination control and storage management processes to eliminate deterioration of stocks and critical spares through contamination, corrosion or decay
  • Logistics: Ensuring appropriate transport, security and response processes for hazardous goods including cyanide and explosives
  • Optimise the sourcing and supply of goods and materials by vendor and geographic location so as to maximise use of consolidated consignments, minimise transport time to site and significantly reduce use of air freight
  • Manage freight forwarding contractors and the relationship with Customs to ensure compliance with customs regulations to minimise business disruption and interference and maintain high standards of ethical business conduct
  • Understanding and correctly applies the fuel exoneration process and follows the correct procedures with DNGM and Customs to secure the annual exoneration
  • Planning & Scheduling: Developing and delivering a shared site strategy in collaboration with other members of the SLT
  • Developing and implementing a departmental strategy; monitor self and team achievement against the plan
  • Championing the development of the Departmental plan and ensure team inclusion
  • Inspiring and influencing peers and team members to assume ownership of the goals and actions
  • Initiating, developing, co-ordinating and evaluating inclusive change strategies
  • Establishing, communicating and monitoring quality standards and embedding a philosophy of continuous improvement
  • Monitoring and tracking performance and timely addressing of variances to ensure deliver of department commitments, goals and objectives
  • Identifying improvements and map to value
  • Ensuring robust physicals and operational budgets are developed and cascaded to the work teams.
  • Ensuring that all identified opportunities and projects are to aligned business priorities, scoped, resourced and executed

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Relevant tertiary qualification
  • At least 5-10 years’ experience in a similar role with over 5 years being in a senior management position
  • Must have strong supply chain management experience
  • Previous experience managing and mentoring nationals
  • Proven expat experience in Africa, ideally West Africa
  • Must display strong leadership qualities
  • Ability to effectively coordinate multiple tasks synchronously
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
